How to Grow Peanuts at Home in Recycled Plastic Containers: A Beginner’s Guide

Choose large plastic containers like old paint buckets, storage tubs, or water jugs cut open.

Make drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.

Prepare the soil

Mix equal parts potting soil and sand for loose, well-draining soil.

Fill the container, leaving 2–3 inches of space at the top.

Choose and prepare the peanuts

Use raw peanuts (not roasted or salted).

Gently crack open the shell and remove whole, undamaged kernels.

Planting

Sow peanuts about 2 inches deep and 4–5 inches apart.

Plant at least 4–6 peanuts per container for best yield.

Watering and sunlight

Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Place the container in a sunny location (balcony, patio, or near a sunny window).

Care and growth

In 4–6 weeks, the plant will flower. After flowering, “pegs” (small stems) bend into the soil where peanuts will develop underground.

Loosen soil gently around plants to make it easier for pegs to penetrate.

Harvesting

Peanuts are ready 4–5 months after planting, when leaves turn yellow and begin to wither.

Gently pull up the plant, shake off soil, and you’ll see peanuts clinging to the roots.

Drying

Hang the whole plant upside down in a dry, airy spot for about 1–2 weeks.

Once fully dry, remove the peanuts from the roots and store them in a cool, dry place.
