Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Prepare Dough:
Roll out the puff pastry or biscuit dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
Add Cheese and Spices:
Spread softened butter over the dough. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese evenly on top. Add paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt if desired.
Roll and Cut:
Roll the dough tightly from one edge into a log. Slice the log into 1/4-inch thick strips.
Twist the Strips:
Take each strip and gently twist it a few times to create the classic cheese straw shape. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Egg Wash:
Brush the twists with beaten egg for a golden finish.
Bake:
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Cool and Serve:
Let cool slightly before serving.
