Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic until the beef is browned and the onions are soft. Drain excess grease. Season with salt, pepper, and optional herbs.
Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the potatoes.
Top with the remaining potato slices, arranging them neatly.
Pour the beef broth evenly over the entire dish.
Cover with foil and bake for 50–60 minutes, until the potatoes are tender.
For a golden top, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
(Optional) Sprinkle shredded cheese on top in the final 10 minutes for a cheesy finish.
