Cook the bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon strips until crisp. Remove, drain on paper towels, and dice. Set aside.
Caramelize onions: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add diced onions and brown sugar. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, golden, and caramelized (about 20–30 minutes).
Combine: Stir the diced bacon back into the caramelized onions.
Cool and serve: Let the mixture cool slightly before serving as a dip. Optionally, mix into cream cheese or sour cream for a creamier texture.
