Crack the egg into a bowl and sniff.
A fresh egg will have no strong odor.
A bad egg will smell sulfuric, rotten, or sour β throw it out immediately.
π 3. Visual Inspection
Check the shell: No cracks, slime, or powdery mold.
After cracking:
Fresh egg: Yolk is rounded, thick, and stands high. White is gel-like and compact.
Older egg: Yolk is flatter and the white spreads out more. Still safe if odor is fine.

Look for the βbest byβ or βsell byβ date on the carton.
Eggs can still be safe 3β5 weeks past the sell-by date if stored properly and pass other freshness checks.
