Place the Grate in the Bag: Carefully place your stove grate into the plastic grocery bag. If the grates are large, you can clean one at a time or use a garbage-size bag.
Add Ammonia: Pour about 1/4 cup of ammonia into the bag (do not dilute it). You don’t need to cover the grate in liquid—the fumes are what do the work.
Seal and Let Sit: Seal the bag tightly and place it in a well-ventilated area, such as a balcony or laundry room, away from children and pets. Let it sit for 8–12 hours or overnight.
Remove and Wipe Clean: After the waiting time, open the bag carefully (wear gloves to avoid skin contact with ammonia fumes). Remove the grate and wipe it down with a cloth or paper towel. Most of the grease and carbon buildup will wipe off effortlessly.
Rinse and Dry: Rinse the grate under warm water and dry it thoroughly before placing it back on your stove.
