Grow Your Own Tomatoes from a Store-Bought Tomato: A Simple Guide for Home Gardeners

Select a healthy tomato: Choose a fresh, ripe tomato that is firm and free from mold or bruising. Any variety will work—cherry, beefsteak, roma, or heirloom.

Extract the seeds: Cut the tomato and gently squeeze out the seeds into a clean container. Rinse the seeds thoroughly under running water to remove any pulp.

Dry the seeds: Spread the rinsed seeds on a paper towel or plate in a single layer. Leave them in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area (out of direct sunlight) for several days until fully dry.

Plant the seeds: Fill pots or trays with potting mix. Place 2–3 seeds per container, pressing them gently into the surface of the soil. Do not bury too deep—just lightly cover with a sprinkle of soil if needed.

Create the right environment: Set your pots in a location that gets 6–8 hours of sunlight daily. Keep the soil moist (not soggy) by watering when the top layer feels dry.
