Master Germination
Clean the avocado seed thoroughly. Insert three to four toothpicks evenly around the seed’s middle to suspend it in a glass of water, with the bottom half submerged. Place in a warm spot and wait for the seed to sprout roots and a shoot—this may take several weeks.
Potting Matters
Once germinated, plant the seedling in a manageable-sized pot indoors, especially if outdoor temperatures drop below 10ºC (50ºF). Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Optimal Growing Environment
Prepare a well-draining, acidic substrate by mixing peat, coconut fiber, and earthworm humus. Add perlite to improve aeration. This blend creates the ideal environment for root development and nutrient uptake.
Essential Care Guidelines
Protect your avocado from cold drafts and extreme heat. Maintain consistent watering to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Proper drainage is critical to avoid root rot.
Fertilization
Fertilize during the active growing seasons—spring and summer—using earthworm humus or a balanced organic fertilizer to provide essential nutrients.
Pruning for Success
When the tree reaches about one year old, prune the top growth to encourage branching. This promotes a bushier plant, which can support more flowers and fruits in the future.
