Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Spread a thin layer of butter on the cut sides of each bun.
Place the buns, buttered side down, onto the hot skillet and toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
Flip the buns and layer the bottom halves with ham and cheese.
Place the top halves on and press lightly to warm the sandwich and melt the cheese.
Remove from heat once the cheese starts to melt and buns are toasted to your liking.
Optionally, spread a thin layer of mustard or mayonnaise inside the buns before assembling.
