Bedbug: How It Lives and How to Eradicate It from Your Home with a Simple Method

Inspect mattresses, bed frames, furniture joints, baseboards, and any small cracks for signs of bedbugs: tiny rust-colored spots, shed skins, or live bugs.

Vacuum Thoroughly
Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up bedbugs from mattresses, carpets, furniture, and cracks. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister contents into a sealed plastic bag immediately.

Wash and Heat-Treat Fabrics
Remove all bedding, curtains, and washable fabrics. Wash them in hot water (at least 60°C / 140°F) with laundry detergent and dry on the highest heat setting to kill all bedbugs and eggs.

Steam Clean Non-Washable Items
Use a steam cleaner on mattresses, upholstered furniture, and other non-washable surfaces. The high temperature kills bedbugs on contact.

Spray Rubbing Alcohol
Lightly spray rubbing alcohol on bedbug hiding spots such as cracks and crevices. It dehydrates and kills bedbugs but should be used carefully due to flammability.

Seal Infested Items
Place items that cannot be cleaned in plastic bags and seal tightly for several weeks to starve any remaining bedbugs.

Repeat Treatment
Bedbugs are resilient. Repeat cleaning and treatment steps weekly for at least 3 weeks to ensure complete eradication.
