Introduction:
There’s something incredibly satisfying about baking your own hot dog buns at home. Not only do they taste fresher and softer than store-bought, but you can also customize them to your liking. This easy recipe yields pillowy, golden buns that are perfect for your next barbecue, family dinner, or casual lunch.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons active dry or instant yeast
1 cup warm milk (about 100–110°F or 37–43°C)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 egg
Optional for Brushing:
1 tablespoon melted butter
How to Make:
Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
Add the softened butter, egg, and the yeast mixture.
Stir to combine, then knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. You can do this by hand or with a mixer fitted with a dough hook.
First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape the Buns:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a log about 5–6 inches long and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Leave some space between each bun for rising.
Second Rise:
Cover the buns loosely with a towel and let rise again for about 30–40 minutes until puffy.
Bake:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the buns for 15–18 minutes until they are golden brown.
Optional:
Brush the hot buns with melted butter for a shiny, soft crust.
Cool and Serve:
Let the buns cool slightly before slicing and serving with your favorite hot dogs.
