Pour the entire can of sweetened condensed milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add the butter and stir gently to combine.

Cook Slowly:
Set the pan over low heat. Stir continuously with a silicone spatula or wooden spoon to prevent scorching. The mixture will start to thicken and darken in color after about 30–40 minutes.

Finish with Flavor:
Once the mixture turns a deep golden caramel color and thickens to a spreadable consistency, remove it from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract for that extra layer of flavor.

Cool and Store:
Allow the dulce de leche to cool slightly before transferring it into a clean jar or airtight container. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
