How to Whiten Yellowed Pillows: Simple and Effective Tips

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the yellowed areas of the pillow. Let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour to help lift the stains. Baking soda is known for its stain-fighting and deodorizing properties.

Prepare the Washing Solution:

Fill your washing machine with warm water, just enough to cover the pillows.

Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the water to help break down the oils and stains.

Add a small amount (1-2 teaspoons) of mild liquid dish detergent to the water. This will help remove any residual oils.

Wash the Pillows:

Place your pillows in the washing machine. It’s a good idea to wash two pillows at a time to balance the load and ensure thorough cleaning.

Set the machine to a gentle or normal cycle with warm water.

Add a little extra rinse cycle to ensure all cleaning agents are fully washed away.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide for Stubborn Stains (Optional):

If the yellow stains are particularly stubborn, add 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide to the wash along with the vinegar. This powerful oxidizer can help break down deeply set stains. Be sure to check if your pillow material can handle hydrogen peroxide by testing on a small inconspicuous area.

Dry the Pillows:

Once the pillows are clean, dry them in the dryer on a low heat setting. To prevent clumping, add a few clean towels to the dryer.

If you don’t have a dryer, air-dry the pillows outside in the sun. The sun’s natural bleaching effect will help further whiten the pillows.
