Egg formation is a fascinating and intricate process! Here's a breakdown of how a hen creates those incredible eggs:

A Hen's Egg Supply: A hen is born with all the eggs she will ever lay throughout her life. These are tiny eggs inside her ovaries, and she will gradually mature and lay them over time.

Egg Laying Begins: Typically, hens start laying eggs when they are between 4 to 6 months old. At this stage, the first egg begins its journey.

Mature Ovum Released: When the ovum (egg yolk) is fully mature, it is released from the ovary and enters the oviduct, a long tube where the egg will be formed. This process involves the egg moving through several parts of the oviduct, and this is where the majority of the egg’s components come together.

Formation of Albumen and Chalazae: As the yolk descends into the oviduct, it’s surrounded by the albumen (egg white). The chalazae, which are the string-like cords inside the egg that help hold the yolk in place, also form during this stage.

Shell Formation: The developing egg then travels to the uterus, also called the "shell gland." Here, the soft shell membrane is created, and the egg shell itself starts to form. This is when the pigment (for brown or white eggs, for example) is added to the shell.

The Final Stages: After the shell is fully formed, the egg is released from the uterus and exits the hen’s body. This is when the cycle starts again, and the hen will repeat the process for subsequent eggs.

Fertilization Fact: While hens can lay eggs without a rooster, if you want chicks to hatch, a rooster is necessary for fertilization.
