Prepare the Paper Towels: Take a few paper towels and dampen them lightly with water. The paper towels should be moist but not soaking wet.
Add the Vinegar: In a small bowl or shallow dish, pour a few tablespoons of vinegar. Apple cider vinegar works best for attracting fruit flies and gnats because of its sweet scent.
Optional: Add Dish Soap: To make the trap even more effective, add a drop or two of dish soap into the vinegar. This helps break the surface tension, causing the flies to sink when they land on the liquid.
Place the Paper Towels Over the Vinegar: Lay the dampened paper towels over the bowl or dish with the vinegar. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar, and the moisture from the paper towels will draw them in.
Set It Near Infested Areas: Place the bowl or dish in the areas where you’ve noticed fruit flies or gnats. It could be near your fruit bowl, trash can, or plants. Leave it for a few hours, or overnight if possible.
Dispose of the Flies: You’ll notice the flies will get stuck in the paper towels or fall into the vinegar mixture. Dispose of the paper towels and repeat the process until all the pests are gone.
