Potatoes and onions should never be stored together. Both release gases that can cause the other to spoil prematurely. Keep them in separate storage areas to extend their freshness.
5. Don’t Wash Before Storing
Washing potatoes before storage can introduce moisture, which encourages mold and rot. Keep the skin dry and only wash potatoes right before use.
6. Inspect Regularly
Check your stored potatoes every few weeks for any signs of sprouting or rot. Remove any damaged potatoes immediately to prevent them from affecting the rest.
7. Freeze Potatoes (Optional)
For long-term storage, you can freeze potatoes, but they must be cooked first. Boil, mash, or roast them before freezing, and store in airtight containers or freezer bags. This method keeps them fresh for up to a year.
8. Store Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight
Exposure to light can cause potatoes to develop green spots and solanine, which makes them bitter and potentially toxic. Keep them out of direct sunlight and heat to avoid this.
