Storing potatoes properly ensures they stay fresh and last for months. With these simple tips, you can keep your potatoes in great condition for up to a year.
1. Choose the Right Potatoes
Start with fresh, high-quality potatoes. Inspect them carefully for any bruises, cuts, or signs of sprouting. Choose mature, firm potatoes without blemishes for the longest shelf life.
2. Store in a Cool, Dark, and Well-Ventilated Place
Potatoes need a cool (45-50°F / 7-10°C), dark environment with good airflow. A cellar, pantry, or dark cupboard is ideal. Avoid storing potatoes in places with excessive heat, moisture, or light, as this causes sprouting and spoilage.
3. Use a Breathable Storage Container
Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and lead to rotting. Instead, use a breathable container like a paper bag, burlap sack, or a cardboard box. These containers allow air to circulate, preventing moisture buildup.
4. Keep Potatoes Away from Onions
