In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat.
Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
Remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside.
Step 2: Sauté the Cabbage and Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the diced onion and garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes until the cabbage starts to soften and brown slightly. Stir occasionally.
Season with dried thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper to taste. If you prefer a creamier dish, stir in the heavy cream and let it cook for an additional 2 minutes.
Step 3: Assemble the Bake
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Transfer the cooked sausage and cabbage mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
Top the mixture with the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese, spreading it evenly over the top.
Step 4: Bake the Dish
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and slightly golden on top.
Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
Serve this cheesy sausage and cabbage bake warm as a hearty main dish. It’s perfect on its own or paired with a side salad for a complete meal!
