Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
Prepare the Brownie Batter:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
Add Optional Mix-ins:
If desired, fold in the chocolate chips or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
Bake the Brownies:
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs (not wet batter). For fudgier brownies, bake for a shorter time; for more cakey brownies, bake a little longer.
Cool and Slice:
Allow the brownies to cool in the pan before cutting them into squares. This will help them set and make slicing easier.
