Spiral Bread with Fillings: A Delicious Twist on Homemade Bread

In a small bowl, activate the yeast by dissolving it in the warm milk with sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Fillings:

For savory fillings: In a small bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, oregano, and basil (if using).
For sweet fillings: In another bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.
Shape the Bread:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 12x18 inches.
Evenly spread your chosen filling over the dough. For savory, sprinkle the cheese and herbs; for sweet, brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Starting from one edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Slice the rolled dough into 1-inch-wide pieces, making spiral-shaped sections.
Arrange and Bake:

Place the spiral slices upright into the prepared loaf pan, fitting them snugly together.
Cover the pan with a towel and let the bread rise for another 30-45 minutes, until it has expanded slightly.
Brush the top of the bread with melted butter (optional) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
Serve:

Let the bread cool for 10-15 minutes before removing it from the pan. Slice and serve warm for the best flavor.
