Step 1: Prepare the Pasta
Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 2 cups of your preferred pasta and cook according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Step 2: Brown the Meat
Cook the Ground Meat: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks, ensuring it's browned evenly. Cook for about 7-8 minutes until fully cooked.
Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the meat. Sauté for another 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
Step 3: Season and Combine
Season the Mixture: Season the meat and onion mixture with salt, black pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning. Stir to combine.
Add the Tomatoes and Sauce: Pour in the can of diced tomatoes (with juices) and 1 cup of tomato sauce. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Step 4: Assemble the Casserole
Layer the Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish, spread half of the cooked pasta evenly at the bottom. Spoon half of the meat sauce over the pasta, then sprinkle a layer of shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
Optional Ricotta Layer: For an extra creamy texture, add dollops of ricotta or cottage cheese over the meat and pasta layers.
Repeat: Add another layer of pasta, followed by the remaining meat sauce. Top with the remaining cheeses, including the Parmesan.
Step 5: Bake
Bake the Casserole: Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Garnish: Once out of the oven, let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color and freshness.
