Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and stir gently. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step is crucial, as it shows the yeast is alive and ready to work its magic.
Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Whisk together to ensure even distribution. If you’re adding herbs or spices, mix them in at this stage.
Combine Ingredients: Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast and olive oil. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a rough dough forms. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. This process helps develop the gluten, giving your bread its structure.
First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, turning it to coat all sides. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Dough: Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface again and shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller portions for rolls. Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan or onto a baking sheet.
Second Rise: Cover the dough once more and allow it to rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until it has puffed up again. This step enhances the texture of the bread.
Preheat the Oven: While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). A properly preheated oven ensures even baking.
Bake the Bread: Once the dough has risen, bake it in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. If you’re using a thermometer, the internal temperature should reach about 190°F (88°C).
Cool and Enjoy: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. This cooling step is essential to prevent the bread from becoming soggy. Slice and enjoy your homemade creation plain, or slather it with butter, jam, or your favorite spread.
