Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease and line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
Prepare Egg Yolks Mixture:
2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg yolks with the granulated sugar until pale and creamy.
3. Add the melted butter, orange zest, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
4. Slowly add the flour and mix until just combined.
5. Gradually add the orange juice and lukewarm milk, mixing continuously until you get a smooth batter.
Whip Egg Whites:
6. In a separate clean bowl, whip the egg whites and salt until stiff peaks form.
7. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter in three additions, being careful not to deflate the mixture. The batter will be thin with some lumps.
Bake:
8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula.
9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the center is slightly jiggly but set.
Cool and Chill:
10. Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it cool completely at room temperature.
11. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set.
Serve:
12. Use the parchment paper overhang to lift the custard bars from the baking dish. Cut into squares and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
